There are two main groups of drugs which have been tested and proven to effectively enhance short term memory, these are the Ampakine Drugs and the Phenserine, Exelon and Aricept drugs. They main similarity between these two classes of drugs is that both work by acting upon neurotransmitters within the brain to increase overall brain activity and capacity, allowing for the enhancement of short term memory along with other learning tasks.\
Although they have this is common the two classes of drugs also have two differences. The first of these two is that the Ampakine drugs have shown promising results in enhancing already working short-term memory in healthy patients as well as results in patients who have brain-impairing illnesses. Unlike the Ampakine drugs the Phenserine, Aricept and Exelon group of drugs haven't produced any results in patients with already working short term memory but only in patients who have these brain impairing illnesses. This limits the use of the Phenserine, Aricept and Exelon drugs making them only suitable as a treatment while Ampakine drugs can be used as a mental enhancer or a treatment.
Both these drugs have the common characteristic of working on neurotransmitters within the brain they differ in that they both work on different types of neurotransmitters in the brain. The Ampakine drugs act on the neurotransmitter Glutamate, while the group Phenserine, Aricept and Exelon act of Acetycholine.
